Fishin’ with Grandpa

Album Lyrics

FRONT PORCH

written by: Bo Phillips

I got a hot apple-pie sittin in the window

summer breeze coolin’ it down

Homemade ice-cream churnin up in my dreams

ain’t nothin’ like it around

Sittin on the porch swing, man there ain’t anything

that’ll ever ruin my day

If you wonder why I got this smile on my face

this is what I’m gonna say

“CHORUS”

I learned how to spit and to whittle back when I was little

toes barely reachin’ the ground

How to cuss, how to fight, wrong from the right

and listenin’ to the hummingbird sound

Snappin’ green beans, hand-me-down jeans

and watermelon seeds on the floor.

Everything I ever did when I was on the front porch,

just don’t do it anymore.

Sun-baked ice tea, underneath a pine tree

sweeter than a long first kiss

Swattin’ at a horsefly, nibblin’ on a Moon Pie

ain’t nothin’ better than this

Rabbit-eared radio, turn it down real low

everybody doin’ their thing

Yeah, when Bubba came out with his beat-up guitar

everybody wanna sing

“CHORUS”

There ain’t a dang thing wrong

with a little slow down

Yeah, you’re tappin’ your toe

on the porch swing,

There ain’t nothin’

like it around

“CHORUS”

(No front porches were harmed during the making of this song)

RED DIRT GIRL

written by: Bo Phillips

She don’t like the way the music is born in Tennessee

Says that they all sound the same to her, with nothin’ new to see

Says she misses Waylon, Willie, Hank and Merle

And one thing that she likes is when you call her Red Dirt Girl

And she gets off on some Reckless, and Randy’s “Lost and Found”

and you know she’s not alone wishin’ Ragweed was still around

Yeah she loves some Jason Boland, the old stuff and the new

And she’ll drive a hundred miles for a chance to see LaRue

And she’ll follow them all around the world, ’cause she’s a Red Dirt Girl

She hates it when a hip-hop station plays a country song

She knows that it’s about the music, but it just seems so wrong

She’ll close here eyes and let the words surround her world

And you know she’s proud as hell to be a Red Dirt Girl

And she listened to Bob Childers and cursed the day he died

And she’d give her last two dollars just to see The Great Divide

Yeah she loves some Brandon Jenkins, and she gets out on the floor

And you know she’s front and center for the Turnpike Troubadours

And she’ll follow them all around the world, ’cause she’s a Red Dirt Girl

And you know it tears her heart out when she has to cross the stream

’cause up there where the dirt was blown from has all but lost the dream

Yeah the music makes her happy and sometimes it makes her cry

And she’ll be a Red Dirt Girl until she dies

And she gets off on the Rangers, and Randy Crouch’s sound

and you know she’s not alone wishin’ Ragweed was still around

And she’ll follow them all around the world, ’cause she’s a Red Dirt Girl

Yeah she’ll follow them all around the world, ’cause she’s a Red Dirt Girl

(Nine out of 10 Red Dirt fans prefer this song over “Chicken and

Biscuits”… and that one out of 10 probably doesn’t chew Big Red)

FISHIN’ WITH GRANDPA

written by: Bo Phillips

I was sittin’ in the back of his pickup truck

He hadn’t made it out, well just my luck

When he finally walked out the door, I couldn’t help but smile

He taught me how to tie it up tight, And we’d be leavin’ out before daylight

It was just up the road, but it felt like a hundred miles

Then he handed me an old cane pole. We headed out to his fishin’ hole

Then we put our lines down in the water, and we waited for the fish to bite

Yeah we talked about God, and talked about livin’

there’s times we would talk all night

Well you know if you didn’t have time to go, he’d tell you it would be a sin

How I’d love to go fishin’ with Grandpa again

Off to school, hoped to make him proud

Workin’ two jobs away from the crowd

I hardly ever had the time to just go back home

But when I had a chance to make it back

it wouldn’t take long and he’d be packed

He’d give me a great big hug, and we were out the door

I never knew the memories we’d make, spending all day out at the lake

Then we’d put our lines down in the water, and we waited for the fish to bite

Yeah we talked about God, and talked about livin’

there’s times we would talk all night

Well you know if you didn’t have time to go, he’d tell you it would be a sin

How I’d love to go fishin’ with Grandpa again

He went home about a year ago, I headed out to his fishin’ hole

I stayed for a while, but I never even got a bite

I looked up, said, “I could use a hand.”

“You know I wouldn’t be half the man.”

“If I showed up later today with nothing to fry.”

Then I felt the wind blow around. And we were eatin’ good about sundown

Because I put my line down in the water, and I waited for the fish to bite

Yeah I looked up to God, and I talked about livin’

But I know that I’ll be alright

You know that I’m gonna find time to go, I hope that I can bring a friend

How I’d love to go fishin’ with Grandpa again

How I’d love to fish, you know it’d be my wish

How I’d love to go fishin’ with Grandpa again

(My Grandpa coulda kicked your Grandpa’s ass)

RIVERBED

written by: Bo Phillips

I was raised at the end of a dirt road, down around Essio

And if you sit right here, I’m gonna make you wanna hear

a little something that you need to know

You see the preacher man, he took me to the riverbed

talked about going back home

Then he looked up at the Father

then he dipped me in the water

said, “you’re never gonna be alone.”

 “CHORUS”

We’re goin’ down to the riverbed, goin’ down to save my soul

and if the Good Lord’s willin’ and the Creek don’t rise

I’ll see you at the end of the road

Well I met a little girl by the riverbed

asked her if she wanna dip a toe

Well she didn’t understand ‘til I took her by the hand

and went jumpin in the swimmin’ hole

Well I married that girl by the riverbed

twenty miles away from a town

and everybody left soon and we spent our honeymoon

skinny-dippin’ when the sun went down

“CHORUS”

I had to move on away from the riverbed

got to go and make my own

And I don’t mind the city, but it sure ain’t as pretty

as the pine trees growin’ back home

Every now and again I get homesick

got to go and clear my head

so I take a little sip

and then I make a little trip

and have a party by the riverbed

 “CHORUS”

 “CHORUS x 2”

(”Creek don’t rise” actually refers to the Creek Indians, look it up, fool)

KINDA LIKE IT HERE

written  by: Brad Heinrichs

People keep on talkin’ ’bout things I don’t wanna hear

Things like where this world’s gonna be in a year

Maybe I should bring someone closer to me

I guess that I’m the kind of person who believes to believe

Everyone keeps wishin’ they were someone else, but I don’t

Everyone keeps wishin’ they were somewhere else

but I don’t wanna hear

‘Cause you know I, yeah you know I…

“CHORUS”

I kinda like it here, I kinda like it here, I kinda like it here

I kinda like it here, I kinda like it here, I kinda like it here

Everyday the sun goes down and the wind starts to die

I could set my watch to the sound of the train rolling by

Everyone keeps wishin’ they were someone else, but I don’t

Everyone keeps wishin’ they were somewhere else

but I don’t wanna hear

‘Cause you know I…

“CHORUS”

No you can’t take this town away from me

No you can’t take this town away from me

Not while I believe, not while I believe in here

“CHORUS x 3”

(If you haven’t already memorized this chorus…  STAY AWAY FROM CRACK)

MY BEST

written by: Bo Phillips

I’m a little bit selfish, insecure

and I think I know it all

Impatient is an understatement

I drive you up and down that wall

I drink too much and I sing too loud

A little silly when I’m in a crowd

but here are just a few things you should know

 “CHORUS”

I’ll open your door and hold your hand

and I’ll be your biggest fan

I’ll hang on every word that you say

I’ll write a love song that makes you cry

and kiss the tears from your eye

and I’ll think about you every day

Yeah, this is more than just a test

If you can’t take me at my worst

then you will never see my best

I’m a little sarcastic, no I’m not

I’m hard-headed and I talk a lot

and I’ve been known to start a fight or two

I like to kick my boots off on the floor

and I’m country to the core

I’m getting kinda tired of me

So baby, how ’bout you

“CHORUS”

There’s more important things

than pickin’ me a fight

So let’s forget about the wrong things

and let me show you right

“CHORUS”

(Don’t actually kick your boots off on the floor… have some class)

YOUR TOMORROW

written by: Bo Phillips

We said some things

I hope we didn’t mean

I didn’t want to hurt you

just trying to live my dreams

You thought it best

to go our separate ways

and it breaks me up inside to say

“CHORUS”

You found a better love

one that makes your heart pound

Someone who took a chance

and made you dance

ten feet off the ground

These are tears of joy

that I thought I’d never know

Oh, it breaks my heart

that I can’t be a part

of your tomorrow

We keep in touch

but not the way I need

If you weren’t so happy now

I’d be crawling on my knees

I’ve tried to keep it in

with us being apart

I just gotta say what’s

weighing on my heart

“CHORUS x 2”

These are tears of joy

that I thought I’d never know

Oh, it breaks my heart

that I can’t be a part

of your tomorrow

(Three puppies were harmed in the writing of this song, but all have fully

recovered and plan to release a book about that freakish yo-yo accident)

AFTER PARTY

written by: Bo Phillips (and Facebook fans)

Do you recall your favorite backroad or some old pasture gate

the one place you can never talk about

Grab a little brush for a bon-fire. leanin’ on the edge of a tractor tire

Sittin’ right next to the one you can’t do without

Natty getting’ cold in the truckbed. Your buddy passed out, but he ain’t dead

He ’bout fell in the fire on his very first taste of ‘shine

Time to break out a guitar.  Listen to the tunes underneath the stars

Somebody brought out a jar of homemade wine

 “CHORUS”

And we need one shot of whiskey

another full case of beer

It’s what I need to get this party on

Sittin’ in the back on a tailgate (Wooo!)

sneak a little kiss ’cause you can’t wait

Sittin’ by the fire til the sun comes up at dawn

Party goin’ on for all night.  Red Dirt rockin’ in the moonlight

And the cops won’t come if anybody has some luck

You just felt a raindrop so you grab a little hottie in a tanktop

Time to make out in the cab of a pickup truck

And we need one shot of whiskey

another full case of beer

It’s what I need to get this party on

Sittin’ in the back on a tailgate (Wooo!)

sneak a little kiss ’cause you can’t wait

Sittin’ by the fire til the sun comes up at dawn

And we need one shot of whiskey

another full case of beer

It’s what I need to get this party on

Sittin’ in the back on a tailgate (Wooo!)

sneak a little kiss ’cause you can’t wait

Sittin’ by the fire til the sun comes up at dawn

(It’s business time)

BOTTLE OF WINE

written by: Bo Phillips

I just bought a brand new car

bring out a bottle of wine

A fella tried to steal it but he didn’t get far

bring out a bottle of wine

I caught him down by the railroad track

bring out a bottle of wine

I did a little number and I got it right back

bring out a bottle of wine

If things are lookin’ up or down and you need you a little good time

Well I know just what you need, just bring out a bottle of wine

I just lost my best friend Bill

bring out a bottle of wine

Left me everything in his will

bring out a bottle of wine

Just a run-down shack about eighty years old

bring out a bottle of wine

But down in the cellar was a barrel of gold

bring out a bottle of wine

If your world is upside down and you need a little reason or rhyme

Just sit right back and forget the glass and bring out a bottle of wine

When it’s time to bring in a brand new year

bring out a bottle of wine

Everybody sippin’ on some ice cold beer

bring out a bottle of wine

You ain’t gotta be rich to throw a little charm

bring out a bottle of wine

That’s why I’m sipping on a little Boone’s Farm

bring out a bottle of wine

Well if you know just what I mean

then lend me a nickel or a dime

’cause I’m going down to the corner store

to bring out a bottle of wine

That’s right,

Gonna bring out a bottle of wine

(I jush wanted… wanted…I jush wanted to shay,

that your’re my best friend… I mean it…no… sheriously…)

CLINGER

written by: Bo Phillips

You looked good when you walked in through that door

about a dozen guys asked you on the floor

But you waved them on off and you headed for me

That look in your eyes and I could see

and I knew that you were wanting just a little more

Pretty soon you were coming to all my shows

I could tell you fallin’ head over toes

You asked me to write a song

I hope you don’t take this wrong

but it’s straight from the heart, so baby here it goes

“CHORUS”

You’re a stage five clinger

and you scare the holy hell outta me

There’s a damn good reason

that I never wanted you to meet the family

Well you’re full of spit

and you throw a bit fit

when I hang out with some of my friends

you’re a crazy bitch

and I never wanna see you again

That protective order didn’t work at all

Now you’re puttin’ my back up to the wall

I don’t know what I need to say

to make you wanna stay away

You need a padded room, so you can’t write or call

“CHORUS”

Well you’re full of spit

and you throw a bit fit

when I hang out with some of my friends

you’re a crazy bitch,

and I never wanna see you again

(No funny comments can be made until pending charges are resolved…)

BIGGEST FAN

written by: Bo Phillips

Well you never picked a guitar

you never sang a tune

you never played the big game

on a Sunday afternoon.

You didn’t have a spotlight

or share the silver screen

but that don’t mean a thing to me

You grew up with a good life

a loving family

You coulda had the whole world

but here you are with me.

You tell me you’re the lucky one

but I know that you’re wrong

It’s because of you I sing this song

“CHORUS”

And I dedicate this song to you

you helped me make my dreams come true

You picked me up when I was down

and made me who I am

And that’s why I’m your biggest fan

You seem to have the answer

when I need a hand

You know just what to say

when I don’t understand

I wish that I could give you more

more than words and rhyme

But I’m thankful that you’re ever mine

“CHORUS x 2”

You picked me up when I was down

and made me who I am

And that’s why I’m your biggest fan

(…and THAT’S why you feel so……….. wait for it………..cool)

DIE FOR YOU

written by: Bo Phillips

I remember, I was a young man

The preacher came and took me by the hand

then he smiled and looked at me

he said, “Son, do you believe?”

We said a prayer and I got the Promised Land

I remember, I was a young man

I saw you and I took you by the hand

Your father walked you down the aisle

I saw a tear in his eye

We said a prayer and I was a lucky man

“CHORUS”

He died for me, and I’d die for you

thick or thin, there’s nothing I won’t do

He knows my heart, and you know it’s true

He died for me, and I’d die for you

I remember, he was a serviceman

went overseas to fight for Uncle Sam

the reason why was never known

but he never made it home

he gave his life so I could be a free man

“CHORUS”

He knows my heart, and you know it’s true

He died for me, and I’d die for you

(All joking aside… thanks to all our Armed Forces men and women.  Their sacrifices

make it possible for you and me to do what we do… THANK YOU)

COWBOY UP

written by: Bo Phillips

Red dirt rising

Dust in your eye

Thunder on the mountain

Fire in the sky

It’s time for the Bullet

Leave it all on the field

Nobody left standing

but the Cowboy will

“CHORUS”

Pistols firing

another one bites the dust

Blood and tears all over the ground

It’s time to cowboy up

Stillwater runs deeper

work is never done

You’ve put in the hard work

now it’s time for some fun

Pulling out the big guns

steady and true

Who will be the next one

it just might be you

“CHORUS”

Red dirt rising

Dust in your eye

Thunder on the mountain

Fire in the sky

Pulling out the big guns

steady and true

Who will be the next one

it just might be you

“CHORUS”

(GO POKES!)
